Upon arrival, they found two vehicles blocking the roadway, with the drivers still trapped inside. Emergency personnel, including the fire department, quickly responded to the scene and used the jaws of life to extricate the drivers from both vehicles.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 34-year-old man driving a Honda SUV northbound on South Jackson Street was struck by a 2017 Ford Escape traveling southbound that had crossed into the northbound lane for unknown reasons. The driver of the Honda SUV was transported to St. Elizabeth's Community Hospital, but despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced deceased. The 18-year-old driver of the Ford Escape was also transported to the hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
