‘It’s gonna create an art renaissance’: CLE artists awarded M to create public art projects in neighborhoods

Transforming Cleveland's Neighborhoods Through the Power of Art

The City of Cleveland has announced a significant investment in public art and place-making projects, aimed at empowering local artists and strengthening the city's diverse communities. This transformative initiative promises to infuse neighborhoods with vibrant creativity, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among residents.

Unlocking the Artistic Potential of Cleveland's Communities

Bringing Beauty and Inspiration to Neighborhoods

The City of Cleveland's Transformative Arts Fund is a groundbreaking initiative that will channel resources into seven distinct public art and place-making projects across the city. These projects, led by a diverse array of talented artists, will bring a fresh burst of creativity and vibrancy to neighborhoods that have long been underserved. One such project is the "Storer Ave. Phoenix Project" led by artist Ariel Vergez. Vergez, a muralist, designer, and fabricator, will create a series of sculptures, murals, and an arts center in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood. His vision is to transform the area with captivating artworks that inspire a sense of pride and connection among residents. "It's like hey- how can we start bringing in beauty so that you know the people in that neighborhood can feel pride and being there," Vergez explains.Another project, "Portals of Knowing," led by LaTecia Delores Wilson Stone, an art educator, director, and playwright, will develop an immersive theater program in the Central/Fairfax neighborhood. By collaborating with residents from Outhwaite Homes and students and families connected to East Technical High School, Wilson-Stone aims to create productions that authentically reflect the community's experiences and highlight its resilience and beauty.

Empowering Artists and Fostering Community Engagement

The Transformative Arts Fund is not just about creating stunning public art; it's also about empowering local artists and fostering deeper community engagement. Rhonda K. Brown, the city's senior strategist for arts, culture, and the creative economy, emphasizes the importance of this initiative in providing opportunities for artists to partner with corporations, schools, and other public and private entities."Creating a project in communities and doing the work that they have presented is not only going to transform them, it's going to transform the entire ecosystem," Brown explains. The fund's impact extends beyond the physical artworks, as it aims to inspire residents, businesses, and organizations to support the arts and become active participants in the city's cultural renaissance.

Celebrating Diversity and Fostering Inclusion

The Transformative Arts Fund is a testament to Cleveland's commitment to celebrating the diversity and richness of its communities. By investing in projects that reflect the unique identities and experiences of residents, the city is sending a powerful message of inclusion and belonging. For artist Jameelah Rahman, whose project "All My Babies Birthing the Afrofuture" explores the intersection of art, culture, and social justice, the fund represents an opportunity to amplify marginalized voices and create spaces for meaningful dialogue. "Ultimately immersive theater consists of audience members coming in and they are taking a role in the production," Wilson-Stone explains, "and within those stories we will blend them together so that we create a true reflection of the community and what they have for their needs and things that we should bring attention to the to the wider community."

Igniting a Creative Renaissance in Cleveland

The Transformative Arts Fund has the potential to ignite a creative renaissance in Cleveland, inspiring residents, businesses, and organizations to embrace the power of art as a catalyst for positive change. As artist Ariel Vergez eloquently states, "It's gonna create an art renaissance."By investing in these transformative projects, the City of Cleveland is not only enhancing the physical landscape of its neighborhoods but also fostering a deeper sense of community, empowerment, and pride. As the city's diverse communities come together to experience and engage with these captivating artworks, the Transformative Arts Fund promises to leave an indelible mark on the city, inspiring a new era of creativity, connection, and civic pride.
