Electric bill too high? Ocala Electric Utility now is giving money back to customers

Ocala Residents Rejoice: Utility Deposits Returned, Savings Unlocked

In a move that's set to bring financial relief to Ocala residents, the city's electric utility is rolling out a new initiative that will see thousands of customers receive refunds on their initial sign-up deposits. This timely announcement comes as households across the region grapple with the rising cost of living, making this news all the more welcome.

Unlocking Savings for Ocala Residents

Deposit Refunds Arrive in August

The city of Ocala has enacted a new ordinance that will allow for the return of residential customers' initial sign-up deposits with the Ocala Electric Utility (OEU). This refund process is set to commence in August, providing a much-needed financial boost to eligible customers.According to the city's news release, the refund program will see over .89 million credited to the accounts of 10,820 OEU customers. The exact amount each customer will receive will vary, as the refund is tied to the individual deposit amount paid when they first signed up for service.

Eligibility Criteria: Consistent Payment History

To qualify for the deposit refund, customers must meet a set of criteria established by the city. Specifically, they must have maintained 24 consecutive months of service with OEU, have a satisfactory payment record (fewer than two penalties), no returned checks, and no delinquencies for the 12 months preceding the refund. The city has also outlined a pathway for customers who may not currently meet the eligibility requirements. "Customers who are not currently eligible for this credit due to not meeting the satisfactory payment record requirement will become eligible after 12 months of satisfactory service," the release states.

Deposits Still Required for New Customers

While the deposit refund program is a boon for existing OEU customers, the city has clarified that new residential customers will still be required to pay a deposit. However, the release notes that "after meeting the above criteria, those deposits will be credited to the customer's account."This approach ensures that the utility maintains a level of financial security while also providing a clear path for new customers to eventually recoup their initial deposit, provided they maintain a positive payment history.

Seeking Assistance? Contact OEU

Customers with any lingering questions or concerns about the deposit refund program are encouraged to reach out to the Ocala Electric Utility at (352) 629-2489. The utility's customer service team stands ready to provide further information and guidance to ensure a seamless transition for all eligible residents. As the August refund deadline approaches, Ocala residents can look forward to a welcome financial reprieve, courtesy of the city's forward-thinking initiative. This move not only supports household budgets but also underscores the municipality's commitment to fostering a thriving, financially secure community.
