Empowering Small and Rural School Districts

Alongside the School Food System Transformation Challenge, the Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative also awards grants to small and rural school districts to improve the nutritional quality of their meals and modernize their operations. To date, the program has provided million in grants to 264 small and/or rural school districts, enabling them to enhance the nutritional value of the meals they serve and streamline their food service operations.This targeted support for smaller and more remote school districts is crucial, as these institutions often face unique challenges in sourcing and preparing healthy, appealing meals. By providing the necessary resources and funding, the USDA is ensuring that all students, regardless of their school's location or size, have access to the nourishment they need to thrive.

Fostering Regional Collaboration and Innovation

To spur innovation and drive change in school cafeterias across the Northeast and Midwest, the Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative has partnered with two organizations: Full Plates Full Potential and the Illinois Public Health Institute.Full Plates Full Potential, a non-profit dedicated to ending childhood food insecurity in Maine, has awarded .4 million in School Food System Innovation Grants to seven organizations. These projects will help schools overcome the barriers to purchasing Maine-based foods for their meal programs and establish long-term solutions and best practices that can be replicated in other regions.The Illinois Public Health Institute, on the other hand, has awarded .7 million to 16 organizations for the Lake Michigan School Food System Innovation Hub's Spark and Innovation Collaborative Awards. These grants will fuel change throughout the Lake Michigan region's school food system, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. By building regional partnerships, scaling programs, and introducing healthy, new products, these projects will strengthen the K-12 food system and create a more resilient and equitable landscape.

Through a suite of more than 16 nutrition assistance programs, including the school breakfast and lunch programs, WIC, and SNAP, FNS serves 1 in 4 Americans over the course of a year.These programs promote consistent and equitable access to healthy, safe, and affordable food, which is essential for optimal health and well-being.
