‘The need is pretty great’: Salvation Army aims to deliver 1000 meals to kids every day in Milwaukee

Feeding Milwaukee's Hungry: The Salvation Army's Mission to Nourish the Community

In the heart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Salvation Army is spearheading a remarkable initiative to combat hunger and ensure that no child goes without a nutritious meal. This inspiring story follows the organization's tireless efforts to distribute 1,000 meals daily across the city, providing a lifeline to those in need.

Nourishing the Community, One Meal at a Time

Volunteers: The Backbone of the Operation

The Salvation Army's Community Outreach Programs Manager, Jennifer Stewart, emphasizes the crucial role of volunteers in this endeavor. "Volunteers in this process are absolutely huge," she says, underscoring the indispensable contributions of these dedicated individuals. Stewart, who has been with the organization for five years, has witnessed firsthand the growing need for healthy food options within the community.

Tackling Food Insecurity Head-On

Monday through Friday, for nine weeks, the Salvation Army's distribution center is a hive of activity. Volunteers meticulously pack thousands of lunches, each containing a sandwich, cheese stick, snack, fruit or vegetable, dessert, and bottled water. These meals are then transported directly to 20 different neighborhoods across Milwaukee's north and south sides, ensuring that children have access to nutritious sustenance during the summer months when school is out.

Responding to the Rising Cost of Living

Jennifer Stewart acknowledges the significant impact of the current economic climate on families, stating, "We know a lot of people are dealing with the increased prices that are occurring." The Salvation Army's Feed the Kids program aims to alleviate the burden of rising food costs, providing a vital lifeline to those struggling to make ends meet.

Bringing Hope and Nourishment to the Community

Tanisha Palmore, a mother who was picking up lunches for her sons, expressed her gratitude for the Salvation Army's efforts. "It's great because grocery food is so expensive," she said, highlighting the importance of the program in supporting families during these challenging times.

Delivering More Than Just Meals

Calvin Rayford, a Salvation Army employee, emphasizes the deeper significance of the organization's work. "It's rewarding to get out in the community and give food to a lot of people who don't have any," he says, underscoring the emotional and social impact of the program. Rayford encourages those in need to "put your pride aside; we're all in the same boat," emphasizing the Salvation Army's commitment to providing a helping hand without judgment.

Expanding the Reach of the Feed the Kids Program

Last year, the Salvation Army distributed an impressive 75,000 free meals, and this year, they aim to surpass that number. "The need is pretty great," says Jennifer Stewart, noting the significant increase in families seeking assistance. With the continued support of volunteers and the community, the Salvation Army is determined to make an even greater impact in the lives of those facing food insecurity. The Feed the Kids program will continue throughout the summer, with detailed information on times and locations available on the Salvation Army of Milwaukee's website. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and the Salvation Army's unwavering dedication to nourishing the people of Milwaukee.
